Device Compatibility

eSIM compatible phones: every supported model by manufacturer

Most phones made after 2020 support eSIM. iPhone XR and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and Google Pixel 3 and newer all have eSIM built in. The iPhone 14 US model removed the physical SIM tray entirely. Check the full list below to confirm your device.

How to check if your phone supports eSIM

Three methods work on any phone. Start with the one that matches your device.

iPhone

Open Settings, tap Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions), and look for Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan. If that option appears, your iPhone has eSIM. On iPhone 14 and newer US models, eSIM is the only option since there is no physical SIM tray.

Android

Open Settings, tap Network & internet (Google Pixel) or Connections (Samsung), then SIMs. Look for Add eSIM or Download a SIM. The exact wording varies by manufacturer, but the option sits in the same SIM management area.

Any phone: the *#06# method

Open your phone dialer and type *#06#. Your phone displays its IMEI numbers. If a 32-digit EID (Embedded Identity Document) number also appears, your phone has eSIM hardware. This works on every phone regardless of operating system.

Carrier lock may block eSIM

If your phone has eSIM hardware but refuses to install a third-party eSIM profile, it may be carrier-locked. Contact your carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, EE, Vodafone, etc.) and request a SIM unlock. In the US, carriers must unlock phones after the device installment plan is paid off. The unlock process takes 24 to 72 hours.

Apple iPhone eSIM compatibility list

Apple introduced eSIM in 2018 with the iPhone XR. Every iPhone released since then supports eSIM. Starting with iPhone 14, US-sold models removed the physical SIM tray and run on eSIM only.

Samsung Galaxy eSIM compatibility list

Samsung started adding eSIM to its flagship phones in 2020 with the Galaxy S20. The Galaxy Z foldable and flip lines followed. Samsung also brought eSIM to the mid-range A54 and A55, but most budget Galaxy phones still lack the feature.

Regional differences matter. Some Samsung phones ship with eSIM disabled in certain countries. The Galaxy S20 sold in South Korea, for example, has eSIM hardware but carriers may not activate it. If your Samsung phone shows no eSIM option in settings, check with your carrier first.

Google Pixel eSIM compatibility list

Google was an early adopter of eSIM. The Pixel 2 included eSIM as early as 2017, but only for Google Fi. Third-party eSIM support (the kind you need for travel eSIMs) started with the Pixel 3 in 2018.

Not compatible: Pixel 2 and 2 XL have eSIM, but only for Google Fi. Third-party travel eSIMs do not work on Pixel 2. The original Pixel and Pixel XL (2016) have no eSIM hardware at all.

Google followed Apple's lead with the Pixel 9 series: US models ship without a SIM tray. If you buy a Pixel 9 in the US, eSIM is your only option for connectivity. International Pixel 9 models keep the nano-SIM tray.

OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, Sony, and other brands

eSIM support outside Apple, Samsung, and Google varies by model and region. A phone may support eSIM in one country but not another. Always check the spec sheet for your specific regional variant.

OnePlus

OnePlus 12, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus 11 support eSIM in the US and Europe. Indian and Chinese variants may not include eSIM. The OnePlus 10 Pro and older models do not support eSIM in any region. OnePlus 13 (2025) also supports eSIM in most markets.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi 13 series and Xiaomi 14 series support eSIM in select markets (primarily Europe and parts of Asia). Chinese domestic models do not include eSIM. The Xiaomi MIX Fold series also supports eSIM in global variants. Redmi and POCO sub-brands do not support eSIM.

Motorola

The Motorola Razr (2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024) supports eSIM across all variants. The Edge 40 and Edge 50 series support eSIM in most markets. Motorola's G-series budget phones do not include eSIM. The Razr+ (2024) runs dual eSIM without a physical SIM tray, similar to iPhone 14 US models.

Sony

Sony Xperia 1 V, Xperia 5 V, and Xperia 10 V support eSIM. Earlier Xperia models (1 IV, 5 IV) also have eSIM, but only in certain markets. Sony phones sold in Japan through carrier channels (docomo, au, SoftBank) may have eSIM locked to that carrier.

Huawei

Huawei P40 Pro+ and newer flagships include eSIM hardware. However, Huawei phones sold after 2019 do not include Google Play Services due to US trade restrictions. This means many eSIM provider apps (Airalo, Holafly, Saily) are not available through Huawei's AppGallery. You can still install eSIMs via QR code, but app-based activation is limited.

OPPO

OPPO Find X5 Pro and Find X6 Pro support eSIM in Europe and parts of Asia. Chinese domestic versions of these phones do not include eSIM. The Find N series foldables also support eSIM in select markets. Most OPPO Reno and A-series phones do not support eSIM.

Phones that do not support eSIM

If your phone falls into any of these categories, it cannot use eSIM. No workaround exists.

  • Budget phones under $200. Most manufacturers reserve eSIM for mid-range ($300+) and flagship ($600+) models. Samsung's Galaxy A14, Xiaomi's Redmi line, and Motorola's G-series all lack eSIM.
  • Phones released before 2018. The eSIM chip did not appear in consumer phones until the iPhone XR and Google Pixel 3 in 2018. Samsung did not add eSIM until 2020.
  • Carrier-locked phones with eSIM disabled. The hardware exists, but the carrier blocks third-party profiles. This is common on phones purchased through installment plans that are not yet paid off. Contact your carrier to unlock.
  • Chinese domestic-market phones. Even phones that support eSIM in their global variants (Xiaomi 14, OnePlus 12) often ship without eSIM in China. Chinese carriers use physical SIM and do not support eSIM for consumer lines.
  • Regional variants of Samsung and OnePlus phones. The Galaxy S20 sold in South Korea, for example, may lack eSIM activation. OnePlus phones sold in India often omit eSIM. Always check your specific model number against the manufacturer's spec sheet.

If your phone does not support eSIM and you are traveling internationally, your alternatives are a local physical SIM card purchased at your destination, a portable WiFi hotspot, or your carrier's international roaming plan.

Dual SIM vs eSIM-only phones

Phones with eSIM fall into two categories. The distinction matters for travelers.

Dual SIM (physical + eSIM)

Most phones from 2020 through 2023 run a physical nano-SIM and an eSIM at the same time. Your carrier stays on the physical SIM. The travel eSIM goes on the eSIM slot. Both lines work simultaneously: your home number receives calls and texts while the eSIM handles data.

eSIM-only (no SIM tray)

iPhone 14 and newer (US models), iPhone SE 4th gen (worldwide), and Pixel 9 (US models) have no physical SIM tray. Your carrier plan runs on one eSIM slot. A travel eSIM goes on the second. This means you cannot buy a physical SIM abroad. eSIM is your only option for adding a local data plan while traveling.

How many eSIM profiles can you store

ManufacturerStored ProfilesActive at Once
Apple iPhone (13+)82
Apple iPhone (XR-12)Up to 51 eSIM + 1 nano-SIM
Samsung Galaxy51 eSIM + 1 nano-SIM
Google Pixel (7+)72
Google Pixel (3-6)Up to 51 eSIM + 1 nano-SIM

Stored profiles remain on your phone even when inactive. You can switch between them in Settings without re-scanning a QR code. This is useful for frequent travelers who visit the same countries repeatedly: keep each country's eSIM stored and activate it when you land.

Frequently asked questions

Does my phone support eSIM?
Open your phone's Settings and look for an Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan option. On iPhone, check Settings > Cellular. On Android, check Settings > Network > SIMs. If no eSIM option appears, dial *#06# and look for a 32-digit EID number. If the EID appears, your phone has eSIM hardware. If not, your phone does not support eSIM.
Can I add eSIM to an older phone?
No. eSIM requires a chip soldered into the phone during manufacturing. No software update, app, or firmware patch can add eSIM to a phone that was built without one. The earliest eSIM phones are the iPhone XR (2018), Samsung Galaxy S20 (2020), and Google Pixel 3 (2018).
Is eSIM available on Samsung A series?
The Galaxy A54 and A55 support eSIM. The A34, A24, A14, and other A-series models below A54 do not. Samsung reserves eSIM for its flagship S and Z lines plus the upper mid-range A54 and A55. Check Samsung's spec page for your model to confirm.
How many eSIMs can iPhone hold?
iPhone 13 and newer store up to 8 eSIM profiles with 2 active at the same time. Older eSIM iPhones (XR through 12) store fewer profiles. You can delete and re-add profiles as needed. The 2-active limit means you can run your carrier eSIM and a travel eSIM side by side.
Do I need to unlock my phone for eSIM?
Yes. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked to accept a third-party eSIM profile. Carrier-locked phones may block eSIM installation even if the hardware supports it. Contact your carrier and request an unlock. In the US, carriers must unlock phones after the contract or installment plan is paid off. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all have online unlock request forms.
Can I transfer an eSIM between phones?
Some providers allow eSIM transfer through their app. Apple supports eSIM Quick Transfer between iPhones on iOS 16 and later, which moves your carrier eSIM to a new iPhone over Bluetooth. For travel eSIMs, most providers require you to scan a new QR code on the new phone. Check with your eSIM provider before switching devices.

How we verified this list

We cross-referenced official specification pages from Apple, Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, Sony, Huawei, and OPPO. Each model was verified against the manufacturer's published tech specs as of June 2026. Regional eSIM availability was confirmed using carrier compatibility databases from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, EE, and Vodafone. We re-check this list monthly and update it when new models launch or manufacturers change eSIM support in specific markets.
